ACT I, SCENE 1—Going to the Party
Friends and neighbors of Mayor and Frau Silverhaus walk to their annual Christmas Party.
ACT I, SCENE 2 – The Party
Mayor and Frau Silverhaus and their children, Clara and Fritz, entertain friends and family in their
home. Special guests include Clara’s Godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. Drosselmeyer is a mysterious man
who brings sweets and three mechanical dolls to entertain the children at the party. He also brings
a special gift for Clara - a Nutcracker in the shape of a soldier. Clara’s young brother, Fritz, becomes
jealous of this gift and breaks it. Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker with his handkerchief and a little
magic. The little girls dance together with their dolls as Clara dances with her precious Nutcracker.
The boys begin feeling very mischievous and plot to cause as many problems for the girls as possible.
Finally, the party is over and all leave to go home. Clara leaves her Nutcracker downstairs as she goes
to bed but is very worried about it since she has heard tales of mice invading the living room when no
one is there.
